This tutorial will show you the basics on how to use the WSFTP v6.x FTP program to upload and download files from SATEXAS servers, and the internet in basic form. WSFTP has 2 modes : 4-window and 2-window classic. This tutorial uses the 2-window format, although both are extremely similar.

I. The Initial Screen

When you first launch the WSFTP program, you should see a screen similar to the screen shown above.

We have labeled a few key areas of the screen, for better understanding.

  1. The Status Windows, shows you that you are currently connected, and scrolls the activity you generate. The Control Panel are your program control-buttons, or menus.

  2. The window on the left, labeled SIDE A is considered Local, or your hard drives on your PC. This is similar to windows file manager.

  3. The window on the right, labeled SIDE B, is the directory tree of the internet server which you have connected to.

  4. The Center Bar is the median that divides the two sides. It is also where the Download and Upload arrows are located.
To get started, click CONNECT...

II. Launching The Program

Instead of making a personal entry, which you can do later, we will make a simple Quick Connection to the server. Click the QUICK CONNECT button.

III. The Quick Connect

On this screen, we will need to make a few entries as shown in the picture above.

  1. Where you see NAME/IP ADDRESS, you need to the the IP Address of the server, or the name of the server which you are connecting to. If you have SATEXAS Domain Hosting (We are hosting your domain), put in www.mydomain.com in the blank, where mydomain.com is the name of your domain.

  2. The account User Name needs to go in the User ID blank.

    • If you have domain hosting, you have one main account that services as your "Main Account", which holds your domain web site, and the rest are just mail-only or other accounts. Since you are probably trying to access your domain, make sure you use the main account and not one of the e-mail or add-on accounts.

    • If you have the unique SATEXAS Personal Server package, then any of the accounts that you have given Administrator rights to can FTP into the main Domain web site.

  3. Type in your account password in the Password blank.

Click OK when the above is completed. This will connect you!

IV. Moving Files

You are now connected and ready to move files back and forth from your PC to the Internet Server! Below are some notes and explanations of your connection :

  1. If you are going to upload a website on the SATEXAS servers, you need to find the Document Root directory, also referred to as your main web directory.

    • On SATEXAS, this normally is a directory called /public_html, like the example above.

    • On SATEXAS Personal Server Domain Hosting Package, it's a directory called /web. Do not mistake your personal account directory with the site's MAIN /web directory. Move "up" the directory tree until you get out of the /users subdirectory and you will find the main /web directory. To move "up" the directory tree, click on the little yellow folder with the bent UP arrow on the far right side.

  2. To Upload files, or send them to the server, select them in the left-hand window, and choose the big arrow pointing RIGHT as shown in the picture.

  3. To Download files, or receive files from the server, select them in the right-hand window, and choose the big arrow pointing LEFT as shown in the picture.

  4. There are two modes in transferring files, ASCII and BINARY. It is very important when you upload files that you upload your files in the correct mode/format.

    • All text files, .html files, script files (.cgi, .pl) need to be uploaded in ASCII mode.

    • All picture files, executables and files not listed above, need BINARY mode.

V. Saving Preferences

Once you have your windows the way you prefer, and you would like to make WSFTP start off in your current directories so you manually don't have to change them each session, click the OPTIONS button below.

Make all your desired changes, and select OK to save them.
